About Patharkhmah

Patharkhmah stands as an administrative epicenter and the primary headquarters of the Patharkhmah Civil Sub-Division, representing the strategic "Western Gateway" of the Ri-Bhoi District in Meghalaya. Officially upgraded to fulfill the state's vision of decentralized governance, the sub-division was established on November 24, 2022, and formally inaugurated on December 2, 2022, by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad K. Sangma. This administrative status transitioned Patharkhmah from a localized hub into a full-scale governance center, now serving as the vital link between the district administration in Nongpoh and the expansive border regions of Western Ri-Bhoi.

Strategically positioned approximately 70 km from the district headquarters at Nongpoh and 120 km from the state capital, Shillong, Patharkhmah is also uniquely located just 60 km from Guwahati. This proximity makes the sub-division a critical commercial and administrative artery between the states of Meghalaya and Assam. The headquarters facilitates a "one-stop" governance model, housing essential offices such as the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) and various sub-divisional departmental branches.

Economically, Patharkhmah is the heartbeat of the region's agricultural sector. The remarkably fertile lowlands and rolling foothills support a thriving horticultural economy characterized by the large-scale production of high-quality pineapples, bananas, and litchis. In addition to its status as a spice hub for ginger and black pepper, the sub-division has seen a recent transformation through the emergence of massive rubber plantations, which have become a dominant economic driver for local landowners.

The sub-division headquarters is not merely a center for administration but a pillar of regional social infrastructure. It hosts the Patharkhmah Community Health Centre (CHC), which serves as the primary medical lifeline for a catchment area exceeding 35 villages, providing essential curative and preventive services. Educational development is anchored by the Patharkhmah Model Degree College and a network of government and mission-run higher secondary schools that empower the local youth.

This blend of traditional Khasi-Bhoi heritage, robust agrarian economy, and modernized administrative delivery cements Patharkhmah’s position as a model of rural-urban growth in Meghalaya.
